Oh my Gelati @ Il Dolce Freddo

Il Dolce Freddo
116 Lygon Street
Carlton, VIC

My friends often say that I am one of those crazy people who love to eat ice-cream especially in winter.  I love eating ice-cream to begin with, but I found myself enjoy it even more during winter.  May be it is because the icy and chilly effects that I got after eating it made me feel the gist of winter cold even more.  My favourite excuse that I often use is that ice-cream melts slower in winter compared to summer, and I can spend as much time to enjoy the texture and flavour of it, rather than gobbling it down before it changes shape and becomes runny.

I remember that many years ago when I came to Melbourne, my friends took me to a yummy gelati place in Carlton, I really had a great time.  Unfortunately, I did not remember the name or the exact location of it, only known that it is somewhere in Carlton, on Lygon street and not that far from Melbourne Uni.  Until recently, my friend Mr T asked me whether I have been to the gelati place in Carlton - Il Dolce Freddo.  Upon finding the answer that I did not, he suggested that I should go and try out the gelati, especially Durian flavour, it would worth a visit.

So Teddy and I went for a gelati hunt on Lygon street.  Once we reached the shop, the flashback of memory I had at Il Dolce Freddo many years ago surged into my head.  I knew it straight away that this is the place I have been looking for.  The colourful shops nearby also served as a hint and remind me of this place.  I had a big smile on my face as I walked through the door and saw those gelati in the fridge.  What a pleasant feeling!

Korean Hot Pot craving @ White Tomato

White Tomato
160 Burke Street
Melbourne, VIC

I have this craving for Korean Hot Pot for quite a while, pretty much since Winter start.  I was pretty much hooked on the Korean Hot Pot every Winter.  I found it is a warm and comfort food and comforting my stomach.  Since I moved to Melbourne, I did not once tried the hot pot here.  Mainly because I don't know which restaurant serve the best tasting hot pot.  Now the craving is taking its toll, I cannot told back anymore.  I decided to push my luck and hope for the best from White Tomato.

The restaurant decor was pretty cute and homey.  I love the high ceiling, I feel that it opens up lots of space and looks less cramp.  They also have BBQ sections, both downstairs and upstairs.  M and I sat downstairs since we were having hot pot and a side meal.  It was quite a good spot for me to observe the whole restaurant.

M left the choice of hot pot to my care, while she picked the side meal - Pan fried beef ($13.50).  I had my mind set on the kimchi, sausage and ham hotpot ($35.90) [two bowls of rice included], mainly because I wanted something spicy with noodle in it.

Bangkok Tapas night @ Red Petite

Red Petite
194 Bank Street
South Melbourne, VIC

It has been quite a while since Miss P and myself had a good & interesting Thai food apart from home cook meal.  We stumbled upon Red Petite after reading about it from ANTS magazine - August 2011 edition.  The part that caught our interests was that they serve a particular type of food that Red Petite named them as Bangkok Tapas.  Basically, these type of food can be classified as appetizers/ street food and they are the mixture of Thai and Chinese cuisines, we called it ข้าวต้มกุ้ย [pronounce: Khao Tom Gui].  We eat them with plain rice porridge or ข้าวต้ม [pronounce: Khao Tom].  I have yet come across any other Thai cafes/Restaurants in Melbourne that serve this kind of food except here.  That nostalgic moment we got from thinking about the street food from home made us wanting to try them even more.  So we made a trip to South Melbourne on a hunt for Thai street food/ Bangkok Tapas at Red Petite.

Red Petite is a small chic cafe by day and an interesting Thai cafe by night [Wednesday - Saturday], situated near the corner of Bank Street and Clarendon Street in South Melbourne.  Just look for a small cafe with a bright red door, and you will find it.

The cafe is quite small and there aren't many tables inside, but one thing I like is its coziness and welcoming feeling that I got from the friendly staff.  I left Miss P in charge of ordering the food, while I made the observation of the cafe and snapped few photos.  The food that Miss P ordered was mainly from Bangkok Tapas menu, and to our surprise, the price of each dish was reasonable as well.

Grilling @ Takumi

Takumi
32 Bourke Street
Melbourne, VIC
www.takumi.com.au

I noticed that I have been eating a lot of Japanese food lately.  Since I started writing this blog, this is probably the forth Japanese restaurants that me and my fellow diners have been to within less than two months time frame.  Well, what can I say, between me and my friends, Japanese cuisine is one of our favourite, after Thai - which is our background.  Now thinking about it, we should visit more Thai restaurants around Melbourne and see which ones worth for the revisit.

Over the weekend, Little T and myself decided to pay a visit to Takumi.  Takumi is a Yakiniku's style restaurant with smokeless BBQ technology.  They also claim that they serve only highest quality Australian Wagyu beef.  We decided to give it a go since we haven't had Yakiniku for quite a while and we wanted to check out their range of Wagyu.  Of course, we wouldn't just go there for their Wagyu, we would put other items on the menu to the taste test too.

First off, we start the night with some drinks, lucky Little T that we went there during the happy hour, so Little T got a special Asahi on tap ($6), while myself settled with Plum Flip ($15), one of the four in the range of Japanese cocktails that they offered.  The cocktail came in nice colour layered, with a mixed of plum wine, midori, lemon juice and cranberry juice.  The smell of it was very sweet, tasted like a cordial with a kick of alcohol.  I kinda enjoyed this Plum Flip drink, too bad that they only gave it just little more than a half-full glass.

Horoki ni Ikimashou!

Horoki Casual Dining Bar
19 Liverpool Street
Melbourne, VIC

On a shopping night, three hungry people were on the street, wandering on where we should go for dinner.  Without booking plus it was a peak hour for dinner service, some funky restaurants were 'no-go' zone for us.  Mr Tommy the Chef, our visiting friend, laid out his card that he would like to have Asian food since he hasn't had them for a while.  After discussion with Miss P and Mr Tommy the Chef, we decided that tonight would be a Japanese night. Miss P suggested that since three of us haven't been to Horoki before, we all should give it a try, so we made our trip there.

When we arrived at the corner of Liverpool & Burke Streets, the familiar scene and memory started to bring back my memory.  I've been to this street before and Horoki must be on the opposite side of Laksa me.  When I went to Laksa me, I put a mental note in my head that next time I must try this Japanese place.  Without knowing the name and focusing on my mental note, the visit to Horoki had slipped out of my mind.  Finally, the day for Horoki has come, yay!

Horoki is a small casual dining bar where there were a combination of table and bar services.  We waited for 10-15 minutes to get a table, the wait wasn't so bad 'cause we utilised the time to check out the menu :).  The staff were so apologetic about keeping us waiting outside.  We reassured them that it was ok since we weren't in a hurry anyway.  After a while, the moment had come...we got the table! The table was quite small for three people, but of course, it was better than three people sitting at the bar.  We started off the night with some warm sake just to warm ourselves up after waiting in the cold.  The chilled sake was to followed after the meal came out.  I found the way they presented the warm sake was cute.  They did not use one of those usual shaped sake bottles, but they used the small kettle lookalike bottle.  The sake itself was alright, sweet, dry and taste great when warm.

After couple of cups of sake, the first meal came out, it was Beef Tartare with quail egg.  The dish was presented in a simple way, minimalistic with only few things on the plate, which made the Beef tartare the center of attention.  I had to admit that this was a great appetizer for us three, especially when having it with sake, the sweetness of the beef was brought out even more.  The amount of sauce was just right, not overpowering the flavour of the beef at all.

The next dish that followed right up was the Rice noodle with spicy cod roe sauce.  The dish was garnished with dried seaweed and spring onions, contrasted well with the colour of the dish since the sauce was quite orange :). The taste of this noodle dish was awesome, the noodle cooked just right and with the sauce full of cod roe, oh my, what a combination.  Very interesting dish indeed!

The most interesting dish award for the night would have to go to the stuffed chicken wings.  We ordered three so we all could have wings to ourselves :).  It was a chicken wing stuffed with mince meat and veggie, the filling was pretty much like gyoza filling and tasted great.  We were so captivated by the idea behind this dish when we noticed that they deboned the chicken wing but still left skin on connected to the wing tip.  I had my piece with a bit of lemon, oh so good.  Neither of us had the wings with the sauce on the side, the wings were great by themselves, being a true star of the night.

We also had our forks and chopsticks out on the Daikon and Sashimi Salad.  The Daikon salad was truly the heart of the dish and Horoki presented it that way.  The daikon salad was in the middle and surrounded by fresh sashimi - King fish, Salmon, Tuna and Scallops.  I must admit that this salad was refreshing, the dressing had the right tanginess that worked well with the sashimi and fresh daikon.  They also added the fried noodles as a crunchy factor to this dish.

Salmon Tataki was on the waiting list for us to taste.  All of us agreed that some pieces of the salmon were seared a tad bit too much and they were falling apart.  We also wished that they would be more generous with the dressing...it was a shame that there wasn't much dressing for us to taste, so it turned out as if we were just having seared salmon.

After filling up our table with food and plates, then came the elongate dish with Tuna Carpacio.  The combination of fresh Tuna, mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese, daikon and dressing went very well together.  However, Mr Tommy the Chef commented that the Parmesan was overpowering the tuna and overall dish.  Miss P and myself didn't notice that in the first bite since the pieces we took had less Parmesan on them.  When we tried with more Parmesan on, we had to agree with Mr Tommy the Chef, less Parmesan was a definite more in this case.

After stuffing our guts out with savoury dishes, we shifted our focus to Horoki dessert platter.  It was a bit unfortunate that they ran out of Green Tea ice-cream, so our dessert platter only had Creme Brulee, Panna Cotta and Tiramisu.  The desserts were average, among all three, the Tiramisu tasted best for us.

After giving happiness to our tummies, Miss P and Mr Tommy the Chef continued to add one last doze of alcohol into their systems with couple of beers in big cold glasses, then we called it a night and slowly made our way out with heavy tummies.

Sweet Seduction@ LuxBite

LuxBite
38 Toorak Road
South Yarra, VIC
www.luxbite.com.au

Girls and cakes are hard to separate them apart...  Me and Little T in the cake shop are like kids in mega toy store.  We got mesmerised by all the lovely cakes and patisseries that were hand crafted by the skillful patissiers.  We found a beautifully done cake is like piece of art, it has its own story to tell.

It has been a while since Little T and I have my mind set on going to get my sticky fingers on to LuxBite's cake slices and macarons.  Finally, the day has come, me and my foodie buddy had set our journey to fill our guts full with sweet stuff.  It was a late afternoon and as we aniticipated, the shop was packed with sweet-teeth/ sweet crazy people like us.  The staff told us we were welcomed to do take away or waited if we want a table, so we left our name and number there.  Ten minutes later, a sweet signal was given, we got the table, hoorah! that wasn't a long wait at all.

Inside LuxBite, it was like a sweet heaven, everywhere we looked, there were cakes and colourful macarons, the cafe was filled with happiness from the patrons.  Since we went there quite late afternoon, couple of cake slices were sold out, so we didn't get a chance to try them. But hey, LuxBite still had more cake slices to offer! Since we wanted something out of ordinary, we ordered couple of desserts that weren't found at other cafe, plus couple more of the macarons to try.  Drinks, we settled with a latte ($3.50) and Orchid Vanilla tea ($4.50), glad to know that they used coffee beans from Toby's Estate, made me feel a bit closer to Sydney :).  Orchid Vanilla tea was served in a clear glass cup, when hot water was poured over, you could see the tea slowly infused and created a nice layer and colour.
The cakes showtime had arrived, the two beautiful cakes were served on our table, there were Epic Chocolate Cravings and Supersized Love.  The Epic Chocolate Cravings was a rectangle shaped chocolate cake slice with the hazelnut crust as a based and topped with salted caramel chocolate ball.  The cake was rich and smooth like a really thick dark chocolate mousse, with a crunchy hazelnut base.  The chocolate was slowly melted in the mouth and left the bitterness of dark chocolate linger in the mouth.

Quick Bite @ Nhu Lan

Nhu Lan
152 Victoria Street
Richmond, VIC

Seeing the Vietnamese bread rolls made me think of the old times at Uni.  I was introduced to the Vietnamese bread roll during my first year at UNSW by one of my friends.  Since then, it became the favourite grab and go food for me.  The size and portion were just right, easy to carry when I needed to run around the campus for the next calls.  Also, it didn't create a much of a mess while eating them since everything was stuffed into the bread roll and put in a small paper bag.

Since my uni days were over, I barely get a chance to eat the Vietnamese roll.  Until I moved to Melbourne, I got my hands on the Vietnamese roll once again.  Trial and tested the rolls from many shops on Victoria Street in Richmond, I found my favourite shop that do the yummiest rolls to my taste.

Nhu Lan is a bakery shop that also sell Vietnamese rolls.  The shop is situated in the heart of the Vietnamese strip in the middle of Victoria Street.  The shop is clean and has good lighting, the staff were friendly and never rush the customers.  They offered around nine different type of rolls, including vegetarian roll (tofu) and each roll cost around $3.80.

The moment I walked in, the smell of freshly baked bread streaming out along with the BBQ meat that they had for the fillings. It got me hungry even more than a minute ago!  I ended up ordering three rolls to share with Miss P..I know, three rolls for two people, we were ones of those nutcases who love food.

The rolls that I ordered were BBQ pork roll ($3.80), BBQ chicken roll ($3.80) and Ham roll ($3.80).  Each rolls were filled with hot chilli...like a mine trap, you wouldn't know where the chillies were until you bit into it.  The rolls were soft and freshly made, unique in taste and the fillings.  The vegetables here were marinated in vinegar, gave out different but yummy taste.  Both BBQ rolls were dressed with Hoisin sauce, but the BBQ chicken roll had extra fried shallots, which gave more aroma to the roll compared to the BBQ pork roll.  The ham roll was delicious as well, there were many type of hams and the roll went well with the paste they put inside.
